DOORS
- Make sure that the doors to your house are solid doors, not easily removed or cut into.
- Make sure your doors fit and will not come open without turning the door knob or lever.
- Door hinges that have the pins on the outside should be installed so that the pins are
not removable.
- Sliding doors need a bar the inside track when they are closed. Alternatively, install a
pin that pushes through a hole through the door that slides and the stationery one.
- Make sure that the doorknobs are not so close to a window that they could be reached
from the outside through the window!
- Use deadbolt locks, even if you have doorknob locks.
WINDOWS
- Windows should have locks or bars for added protection. The window catch is not enough.
- Make sure that your curtains or blinds don't gap in the center or at the sides when they
are closed.
- Be sure that your alarm system will be triggered if a window is opened OR if it is
broken.
GARAGE
- Keep your garage door(s) closed and locked.
- Be sure to have a good light inside the garage.
OUTSIDE
- Keep your shrubs cut so that you can see out your windows.
- Make sure your house number is visible from the street.
- Make sure all doorways are well lighted.
- If your community has a neighborhood watch program, get the information and join it.
ALARM SYSTEMS
- Alarms monitored 24 hours by a central alarm service may qualify your home for a
discount on your insurance premium.
- Alarms should protect all entries to your house: gates, doors, windows.. not just the
main door!
